In the spring of 2016 I was invited to create an installation in a former knitting mill in Ridgewood, Queens, which had particular resonance for me because my family’s confiscated business in Berlin had manufactured eiderdown quilts. The Ridgewood mill had functioned for decades but after sitting empty for several years the building had been purchased to be developed as a mixed-use space with both residential and commercial tenants. I was fortunate to be able to use the raw space before construction began and made a series of wall drawings using yarn and nails. The enormous space increased the scale of the work and it pushed me to engage directly with the building structure itself and opened up a new way of thinking about my approach to my work and its relationship to architecture.
